Four dead, over 20 injured in Takoradi-Accra car accident

A tragic road accident involving a Takoradi-Accra-bound Yutong bus has claimed four lives and left over 20 passengers with life-threatening injuries.

The accident occurred on Friday morning near Aggrey Memorial Senior High School (SHS) in the Central Region.

The bus, which had 53 passengers on board, overturned following an attempt by the driver to avoid a towing vehicle engaged in a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre.

Eyewitnesses and survivors recounted that as the bus driver tried to avert a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle, he lost control, causing the bus to topple onto its side and skid across the road before coming to a halt.

Two passengers, Jonas Ofori Teye and Kojo Asiedu, described the terrifying moment the accident unfolded. “The driver was trying to save us from a worse situation,” Teye explained. “He swerved to avoid the towing vehicle, but the situation escalated quickly with an oncoming car.”

Despite the driver’s efforts, the sudden swerve caused the bus to tip over, leading to chaos among passengers. Many were left trapped inside, while others managed to escape through shattered windows.

Charles Opoku, an eyewitness who was among the first to arrive at the scene, recounted the frantic rescue efforts. “Some passengers were stuck inside the wreckage, and we had to pull them out carefully. Others were able to jump out of the windows to save themselves,” he said.

Emergency responders, including personnel from the National Ambulance Service, arrived shortly afterward to provide medical aid and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.

According to Keteku Prosper, a principal with the Emergency Medical Team of the National Ambulance Service, the victims were initially taken to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

However, due to overcrowding at the facility, some were redirected to the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Hospital for treatment.

Keteku provided details about the injured, confirming that they included 10 men, seven women, and five children. “It was a challenging situation, but we managed to distribute the victims to ensure they received urgent medical attention,” he explained.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the accident, focusing on the actions of the towing vehicle driver, whose reckless overtaking is believed to have triggered the chain of events. The identities of the deceased have not yet been released, and updates on the condition of the injured are awaited.
