Four Accra Academy Students in Court Over Alleged Machete Assault

Four students from Accra Academy Senior High School have been taken to court for allegedly assaulting their junior colleagues.

The incident, which was captured on video and widely shared on social media, showed one of the victims being attacked with a machete.

The students appeared before the Dansoman Circuit Court on Monday, February 24, 2025. Among them, 21-year-old Richard Ninson was the only adult, but he was absent in court. He has been charged with two counts of abetment of crime related to the assault.

The other three accused, aged between 15 and 17, are minors. Their names have been withheld due to their age. They pleaded not guilty to charges of assault, abetment of crime, and threat of harm.

Justice Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Basit granted the minors bail under the Juvenile Justice Act. Each was released to the custody of a relative—father, uncle, or aunt—who stood as a surety. The bail was set at GH₵10,000 per student to allow them to prepare for their upcoming examinations.

The case has been adjourned to April 14, 2025, with the prosecution ordered to submit all necessary documents before the next hearing.

According to Chief Inspector Portia Nuarko, the complainant, a teacher at Accra Academy, reported the case after school authorities saw the viral video.

Investigations revealed that on January 17, 2025, a group of first-year students was praying at the school park when the accused confronted them. The accused allegedly forced them to kneel and demanded money.

One of the victims, who was holding a phone, was told to delete all its contents and hand it over. He was later asked to pay GH₵500 to get it back. The other victims were forced to contribute GH₵10 each.

The prosecution stated that one of the accused struck a victim in the chest and used a machete to beat him while another recorded the assault. The victims were warned not to report the attack or risk further harm.

The prosecution has been directed to submit disclosures and witness statements before the next court hearing in April.

Meanwhile, the accused students remain under the supervision of their guardians as legal proceedings continue.
