Former NPP Aspirant Collins Amoah Engages Lawyer in GH₵800,000 Fraud Case

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant Collins Amoah, who is facing charges for allegedly conspiring to defraud a businessman of GH₵800,000, has engaged legal representation in the case before the Accra Circuit Court.

His lawyer appeared in court following the issuance of a bench warrant for his arrest on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, by presiding judge Susana Eduful. Amoah, alongside 51-year-old trader Solomon Okuley, has been charged with defrauding by false pretences.

When the case was called on Monday, February 3, 2025, Amoah’s counsel informed the court that his client was out of the jurisdiction when the prosecution initiated investigations and was never invited by the police for questioning.

He asserted that Amoah is a law-abiding citizen willing to prove his innocence.

Chief Inspector Teye Okuffo, leading the prosecution, requested additional time to review the docket, a move that prompted the judge to question why the case had been filed without a thorough examination of the documents.

Meanwhile, Solomon Okuley, who had previously been granted GH₵1 million bail after pleading not guilty, failed to appear in court, leading to a bench warrant for his arrest. The court adjourned the case to February 19, 2025.

The prosecution alleges that Amoah and Okuley defrauded a businessman by promising to use their political connections to clear his Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) tax debt. Instead, they allegedly misappropriated the GH₵800,000 for personal and political purposes.

According to Chief Inspector Okuffo, in June 2024, the complainant met the accused individuals, who convinced him to hand over GH₵800,000 to settle his tax obligations. Trusting their claims, the complainant, Ababio, transferred the money in the presence of witnesses.

However, after receiving the funds, the accused persons failed to fulfil their promise and began avoiding the complainant. By December 28, 2024, after several unsuccessful attempts to recover his money, Ababio reported the matter to the police, leading to Okuley’s arrest the same day.

During interrogation, Okuley allegedly admitted to receiving the funds but claimed that Amoah had taken GH₵650,000 for his personal political activities rather than settling the complainant’s GRA debt.

The case remains under investigation, with both accused individuals set to reappear in court later this month.
