Elmina Residents Reject Salt Mining Deal, Accuse Chiefs of Betrayal

Residents of Elmina in the Central Region have staged a protest against a salt mining lease granted to a private developer by their traditional leaders.

Clad in red attire and holding placards, the demonstrators took to the principal streets to express their discontent, accusing the traditional council of sidelining the community in decisions regarding the salt mining lands. Placards bore messages such as “We want our salt” and “Give us what is due us and don’t sell Elmina.”

John Quayeson, leader of the protest, emphasised the community’s frustrations, stating, “We want our leaders to know that the salt is not for them; that is what we want them to understand.”

Despite the accusations, the Edna Traditional Council has rejected the claims. Nana Nkuando IV, Adontihini of the council, labelled the protest as an attempt to tarnish the council’s reputation. “It’s an action in nullity,” he remarked.

The dispute highlights tensions over the management of natural resources and the balance between development and community involvement in Elmina.
