Education Minister Orders Compulsory Use of Mother Tongue in All Ghanaian Schools

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure the strict enforcement of mother tongue instruction across all Ghanaian schools.

The directive, according to the minister, is part of a broader reform agenda aimed at improving teaching and learning outcomes by promoting the use of local languages as the primary medium of instruction, especially at the basic education level.

Speaking at the launch of the Free Tertiary Education Programme for Persons Living with Disabilities in Accra, Mr Iddrisu said the policy forms an integral part of President John Mahama’s “Reset Agenda” for education, which focuses on inclusivity, cultural identity, and quality learning outcomes.

“I am directing the Director-General of the GES and the GES that from today, teacher use of mother tongue instruction is now compulsory in all Ghanaian schools.”
he announced.

“The GES is to ensure strict enforcement of this. This is part of President Mahama’s reset agenda,” he added.

Mr Iddrisu noted that many Ghanaian pupils struggle with comprehension when taught solely in English, especially in the early stages of their education. Using local languages, he said, will bridge the gap between the home and classroom, making learning more relatable and effective.

He emphasised that the new directive seeks to restore confidence in local languages, promote literacy development, and lay a stronger foundation for pupils before transitioning to English-based instruction in higher classes.

The policy directive is part of the Ministry’s broader plan to reset and strengthen Ghana’s education system, focusing on inclusivity, foundational literacy, and the integration of local culture into formal education.

The minister explained that under the new framework, teachers will receive further training and support to effectively deliver lessons in the mother tongue while ensuring that students grasp key concepts more easily.

The GES has been tasked to immediately begin enforcing the directive in all public schools, monitor compliance, and collaborate with the Ministry of Education to address logistical challenges such as the availability of teaching materials in local languages.
