Several hours after the close of polls in Ghana’s December 7 general elections, the Electoral Commission (EC) has yet to declare any certified results, leaving voters, especially supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in suspense.
The EC previously announced that the collation of both presidential and parliamentary results was underway at all 276 constituency collation centres. By their last update, about 60 percent of polling station results had been received at these centres.
However, progress has been slow, with results yet to be processed in many areas despite polls closing at 5:00 PM on Saturday. The delays are largely attributed to incidents of chaos and confusion at polling stations across the country, particularly concerning the transportation of ballot boxes to collation centres.
Reports indicate that presiding officers from various polling stations are still queuing to have their results validated, a critical step before collation and declaration can proceed.
The delay has sparked anxiety among voters, with many expressing concerns over the credibility and transparency of the electoral process. Observers are urging the EC to expedite the collation process while ensuring accuracy and fairness to maintain public trust in the outcomes.
