EC Orders Rerun at Abokobi Women’s Development Centre 2 in Dome Kwabenya Over Discrepancies

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced a rerun of the election at the Abokobi Women’s Development Centre 2 polling station in the Dome Kwabenya constituency after discrepancies emerged during the collation process.

The decision follows the conclusion of results for 367 polling stations, leaving three results in dispute.

Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the EC’s Director of Training, provided insights into the matter, revealing that one of the three results was rejected outright due to procedural errors.

“The commission rejected one of them outrightly on the stance that it was declared on a wrong statement of poll because they used training sheets, which is not the one that they should use,” Dr. Quaicoe explained.

After incorporating the two valid results, the margin between the two leading candidates stood at just 165 votes. However, the rejected polling station had 669 registered voters, a figure that could significantly alter the final outcome.

“If all those votes were allocated to the trailing candidate, they would surpass the leading candidate,” Dr. Quaicoe noted, justifying the EC’s decision to hold a rerun.

The rerun at Abokobi Women’s Development Centre 2 will determine the final outcome of the Dome Kwabenya parliamentary race. Dr. Quaicoe assured the public that the rerun would occur before the inauguration of the new parliament.

The parliamentary contest in Dome Kwabenya has been closely watched. Elikplim Akurugu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was initially declared the winner, flipping a seat historically held by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

However, her victory was clouded by allegations of irregularities, including claims of tampered pink sheets and disruptions at the collation centre by party supporters.

The EC’s decision underscores the high stakes of the rerun, with both parties poised for a final showdown in one of the country’s most contentious electoral battles.
