Dr. Bawumia Receives Ghana’s Highest Honour at 2024 National Honours Ceremony
Ghana’s outgoing Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has been decorated with the nation’s highest civilian honour, the Order of the Star of Ghana—Officer Award, in recognition of his eight years of public service.
The prestigious award was presented by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during the 2024 National Honours ceremony held on Monday, December 30, at the Accra International Conference Centre.
Dr. Bawumia, who served as Vice President under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration and was the party’s presidential candidate in the 2024 elections, received the accolade despite his recent electoral defeat to former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In his remarks, President Akufo-Addo commended Dr. Bawumia for his dedication and service, describing him as a key figure in advancing Ghana’s development agenda during his tenure.
Also honoured at the ceremony was Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Dr. Bawumia’s running mate in the 2024 elections and a former Minister of Energy. Dr. Prempeh received the Order of the Volta—Officer Award for his contributions to public service.
The event celebrated the achievements of Ghanaians from various fields, including civil service, military, judiciary, education, public health, sports, and agriculture.
Notably, JoyNews journalist Erastus Asare Donkor was awarded the Order of the Volta (Membership) for his fearless journalism and commitment to exposing illegal mining activities and environmental degradation.
President Akufo-Addo praised the honourees for their sacrifices and contributions to national development, emphasising the importance of recognising excellence and dedication in service to the nation.
“Today’s ceremony is a testament to the incredible work done by individuals who have gone above and beyond for our country,” the president stated during the awards presentation.
The 2024 National Honours event saw a gathering of dignitaries, including Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, ministers of state, and other high-ranking officials.
The recognition of Dr. Bawumia and other honourees underscored the nation’s gratitude for their service and commitment to Ghana’s progress.
The ceremony, which marks the end of the Akufo-Addo administration, celebrated the achievements of individuals whose efforts have left an indelible mark on the nation, serving as an inspiration for future generations.
