The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly cautioned the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana against any plans to recollate parliamentary election results in certain constituencies, arguing that such actions would undermine the will of the people.
Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, issued this warning in a Facebook post, stating that the party would resist the move and cautioning the EC not to test their patience.
In a press conference on Thursday, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa explained the decision to revisit the results of some constituencies, citing irregularities during the declaration process.
Specifically, she highlighted the Ablekuma North and Okaikwei Central constituencies, where NDC parliamentary candidates Awurabena Aubynn and Baba Sadiq were declared winners.
According to Mrs. Mensa, these declarations were made without the requisite pink sheets from all polling stations, and some electoral officers were allegedly coerced or threatened into announcing the results prematurely.
Dr. Omane Boamah, however, accused the EC of acting under the influence of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to diminish the NDC’s parliamentary majority.
He said the move was an attempt to dilute the NDC’s anticipated two-thirds majority in the upcoming 9th Parliament. In his post, he referred to the EC’s press conference as “useless,” stating:
“Useless press conference by Jean Mensa. She has obviously been instructed by NPP to dilute the 2/3 majority of NDC. But she will fail!”
Dr. Boamah insisted that the EC must produce pink sheets proving the NDC’s victory in all disputed constituencies.
He also criticised the EC for avoiding an emergency meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) to address the issue.
The NDC has called for transparency and accountability in the electoral process and reiterated its demand for an emergency IPAC meeting to resolve the matter.
Dr. Boamah emphasised that the party “means business” and is committed to protecting the will of the people.
The EC’s next steps in handling these contested results will be closely watched as the situation continues to unfold.
