Do not repeat the mistake of 2008—Akufo-Addo urges support for Bawumia

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has cautioned Ghanaians, particularly voters in the Ashanti Region, against repeating the mistake of 2008, when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost power.

He urged the electorate to rally behind Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing him as the most capable leader to move Ghana forward.

Speaking to a gathering of professional groups in Kumasi on Sunday, November 24, the president underscored the critical role the Ashanti Region plays in determining the NPP’s electoral fortunes.

He called for unity and steadfast support for Dr. Bawumia to secure victory in the 2024 elections.

Highlighting the track record of previous leaders, President Akufo-Addo contrasted Dr. Bawumia’s vision and competence with what he called the “failed leadership” of former President John Dramani Mahama.

He pointed out that, unlike other presidents who earned second terms, Mahama’s poor performance denied him re-election.

“We have two people in the race: one, a failed president, and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” the president stated. “Of all the presidents—Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, John Dramani Mahama, and myself—only one was not given a second term, and that is because he did a poor job.”

Akufo-Addo described Dr. Bawumia as a well-prepared and capable leader with the experience and vision to tackle Ghana’s challenges and foster development.

He called on Ghanaians to avoid a repeat of past mistakes and instead place their trust in the vice president.

“The future of Ghana lies in the hands of a leader who is ready and equipped to lead. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has demonstrated his capacity, and it is up to us to support him to ensure continuity and progress,” he emphasised.

The president’s endorsement of Dr. Bawumia adds momentum to the vice president’s campaign, positioning him as the NPP’s strongest contender in the upcoming elections.
