The funeral of celebrated Ghanaian music icon Daddy Lumba will proceed as scheduled tomorrow, Saturday, December 13, following the inability of applicants in a family dispute to raise the GH₵2 million mandated by the Accra High Court.
The court had earlier ruled that if the applicants failed to pay the amount, the late musician’s body would be released for burial. With the deadline now expired, Transitions Funeral Home says it is awaiting the certified court order to officially commence final funeral arrangements.
This latest ruling marks a dramatic shift in a long-running legal tussle that saw an injunction temporarily restraining the family head from organising the funeral and preventing the funeral home from releasing the body. Lawyers for the applicants described the new directive as “practically impossible”, arguing that the court lacked authority to alter its initial orders without prior notice.

They suggested signing an undertaking to pay the GH₵2 million later, warning that the abrupt change risked creating public confusion.
However, respondents disputed the amount, insisting that GH₵2 million did not reflect the substantial costs already incurred for dignitaries, contractors, and key preparations.
They argued that the required sum should exceed GH₵5 million, stressing that the burial must go ahead if the maternal family failed to meet the obligation.
In clarifying its ruling, the High Court stated that the directive does not affect the Daddy Lumba LBG Foundation or the second respondent.
It emphasised, however, that failure to pay the outstanding amount obliges Transitions Funeral Home to release the body, effectively clearing the path for the funeral to take place while financial matters continue to be addressed.
With the legal hurdles now eased, preparations are expected to continue through the night as Ghana gets ready to bid farewell to one of its most influential and beloved musicians. The decision marks a critical turning point in the months-long dispute surrounding Daddy Lumba’s burial.
