Cybercrime Cases Surge to 2,008 in Ghana, Losses Hit GH₵14.9m — CSA

Ghana is facing a surging wave of cybercrime, with reported cases rising from 1,317 in the first half of 2024 to 2,008 during the same period in 2025, the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has revealed.

The figures, released at the launch of the 2025 Cybersecurity Awareness Month, underscore growing threats to online safety, financial stability, and national security.

According to CSA data, the most prevalent incidents were:

  • Online fraud — 36%
  • Cyberbullying — 25%
  • Online blackmail — 14%

The Authority also reported a 17% jump in financial losses year-on-year, with victims losing GH₵14.94 million in the first half of 2025 alone. Online fraud and impersonation accounted for more than 90% of the losses, highlighting the vulnerability of citizens in Ghana’s fast-expanding digital economy.

CSA Director-General Divine Selasi Agbeti described the trend as alarming and urged urgent action.

“Concerns over data security and online privacy are growing, which in turn breeds distrust and undermines national security efforts. This year’s awareness month will address these concerns and promote the ethical use of technology,” he said.

This year’s awareness campaign is themed: “Building a Safe, Informed, and Accountable Digital Space.”

The Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, called for stronger investment in cybersecurity infrastructure and law enforcement.

“The pace of technology demands sustained development. I call on the private sector to strengthen its defences and report cases promptly. Silence empowers criminals, but collaboration helps us all,” she stressed.

The CSA has pledged to intensify public education and partnerships with security agencies to curb the rising menace, while urging individuals and organisations to adopt stronger cyber hygiene practices such as two-factor authentication, regular password updates, and prompt reporting of suspicious activity.
