The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has raised concerns over a sharp increase in cyber fraud in Ghana, reporting financial losses of GH₵4.4 million between January and March 2025.
This marks an 83% surge compared to GH₵2.4 million recorded during the same period in 2024.
According to the CSA, 350 cases of cyber fraud have been reported so far this year, with scammers exploiting digital platforms to target unsuspecting victims. The alarming trend has prompted the CSA to issue a public alert, urging citizens to be extra cautious during festive seasons, when cybercriminals often strike.

The CSA has identified three common tactics used by scammers, especially during Eid celebrations and the upcoming Easter festivities:
- Fake Online Shops: Fraudsters create counterfeit online stores or impersonate legitimate businesses on social media, luring victims with unrealistic discounts. Once payments are made, victims never receive their purchases.
- Brand Impersonation: Scammers manipulate search engine results to display fake business listings. Customers unknowingly engage with fraudulent contacts and are duped into making payments for goods or services that never arrive.
- Phishing Scams: Cybercriminals send deceptive messages or emails disguised as festive promotions, romantic partners, or official communications. Clicking on these links often leads to malware installation or the theft of personal information.
The Cyber Security Authority advises the public to take the following precautions when shopping online:
- Verify Online Retailers: Use reputable e-commerce platforms and read customer reviews before making purchases.
- Avoid Advance Payments: Pay only after inspecting and receiving items. Ensure mobile money transactions are made to official business accounts.
- Beware of Suspicious Offers: Be cautious of unsolicited messages promising massive discounts or urgent deals.
- Protect Personal Information: Never share Ghana Card details, bank account numbers, or credit card information with unknown sources.
The CSA has urged Ghanaians to report cyber fraud incidents using the following channels:
- Call or Text: 292
- WhatsApp: 0501603111
- Email: report@csa.gov.gh
In a statement issued on March 28, 2025, the Cyber Security Authority reaffirmed its commitment to protecting citizens from cyber threats and maintaining a safe digital environment in Ghana. The CSA emphasised the importance of vigilance and responsible online behaviour to curb the rising menace of cyber fraud.
As the digital economy expands, the CSA is determined to strengthen cybersecurity measures and work with stakeholders to ensure the safety of Ghanaians online. The Authority continues to engage in public education and awareness campaigns to build a resilient and cyber-aware society.
The CSA calls on all Ghanaians to stay alert, report fraud promptly, and help combat cybercrime to protect the country’s digital ecosystem.
