Over 100 shops were destroyed, leaving traders in despair and suffering significant property loss.
In a statement signed by the District Secretary, Elder Samuel Aryeetey, on behalf of District Pastor Gilbert John Ayamah, the church conveyed its condolences to all affected members. The message read:
“Our attention has been drawn to the unfortunate incident/disaster at Kantamanto, where it is believed some of our members have been affected. On behalf of the District Pastor, John Gilbert Ayamah, we extend our heartfelt sympathy to all affected members. God will restore all lost properties in Jesus’ name.”
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) mounted a massive operation to tackle the fierce blaze, which erupted around 1 a.m. Fire appliances from 12 stations across the Greater Accra Region were deployed, including teams from Makola, Greater Accra Regional Headquarters, National Headquarters, Flagstaff House, and Parliament House.
The intensity of the fire required reinforcements from additional fire stations at Circle, Trade Fair, and Dansoman, as well as fire tenders from Abelenkpe, Kasapreko, Tema Regional Headquarters, and Madina. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) also disconnected power to the area to ensure firefighter safety and prevent electrocutions.
Firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the inferno and prevent it from spreading to adjacent areas.
According to a GNFS spokesperson, the scale of the operation reflects the severity of the disaster.
Despite the GNFS’s efforts, large portions of the market have been destroyed, leaving many traders in despair. Traders have expressed suspicions of arson, citing the rapid spread of the flames. Investigations into the cause of the fire are expected to commence once the blaze is fully extinguished.
A concerned trader remarked, “We need to know what caused this disaster. This is not the first time Kantamanto has suffered such a tragedy, and it’s time we get to the root of these incidents.”
The GNFS has assured the public of its dedication to resolving the crisis and mitigating its impact. “This is a challenging situation, but our team is fully equipped and committed to bringing it under control. We urge the public to remain calm as we continue our efforts,” read a GNFS statement.
