The Bureau of Ghana Languages has announced that processes are underway to develop reading and instructional materials for the teaching of the Ahanta language in schools, following its official adoption into Ghana’s national educational curriculum.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, January 22, the Executive Secretary of the Bureau, Ebenezer Ahiator, said the move is aimed at ensuring the language is effectively taught, assessed, and sustained within the formal education system.
According to him, the Bureau is working closely with the Ghana Education Service (GES), the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to integrate Ahanta into teaching and examination structures nationwide.

“We, as a Bureau, have discussed everything with the MP, and we are going to develop reading materials. We are in touch with the GES, WAEC, and NaCCA so that at the end of the process, the language will be examinable. People are being trained up to the PhD level, not just the basic level,” Mr Ahiator explained.
He further called on stakeholders to deliberately sponsor individuals to study local languages, stressing that the availability of trained teachers is critical to the successful teaching of Ahanta and other Ghanaian languages in schools.
The development follows the official endorsement of the Ahanta language into the national education system, a move seen as a major step toward preserving indigenous languages and promoting cultural identity.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Ahanta West, Mavis Kuukua Bissue, disclosed that the Ahanta Renaissance Project has already begun rolling out teacher training programmes across schools in the constituency.
“We are doing a pilot scheme for about 40 schools in Ahanta West, and it is really working. That pushed me to see that when it is promoted, it will work. People are interested in learning, including the children,” she said.
