Bishop Salifu Amoako and 2 others re-arrested after AG dropped initial charges

In an unexpected legal development, the Attorney General has withdrawn charges against Bishop Elijah Salifu Amoako, his wife Mouha Amoako, and Linda Bonsu Bempah, a sales assistant, in connection with a fatal accident in East Legon.

However, moments after their discharge by the court, they were re-arrested under fresh legal circumstances.

On Monday, February 17, 2025, the state informed the court of its decision to drop all charges against the accused.

The move was reportedly to allow law enforcement to conduct further investigations and determine the next legal steps. Following the announcement, the judge officially struck out the case, leading to the temporary release of the trio.

The charges stemmed from a tragic incident on October 12, 2024, when the couple’s 16-year-old son, driving a white Jaguar F-Pace Sport without a valid license, collided with an Acura utility vehicle. The crash caused the Acura to catch fire, leading to the deaths of two young girls.

In December 2024, the teenager, who initially denied all charges, changed his plea to guilty and was sentenced to six months at the Senior Correctional Centre for manslaughter. As part of the sentence, he was required to report to probation officers every two weeks and sign an undertaking not to drive until he reaches the age of 18.

Additionally, Bishop Amoako and his wife were each fined 500 penalty units (GH₵6,000) for failing to properly supervise their son. They were also directed to pay for damages caused by the accident, including a light pole valued at GH₵8,000.

While authorities have not disclosed the specifics behind their re-arrest, legal experts speculate that new charges may be forthcoming based on fresh evidence. The case has reignited debates about parental responsibility, juvenile justice, and road safety enforcement in Ghana.

The nation now awaits further legal proceedings to determine the fate of Bishop Salifu Amoako, his wife, and Linda Bonsu Bempah.
