Bawumia had no option but to concede- Malik Basintale

The Deputy National Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale, has stated that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), had no choice but to concede defeat before the official results were declared.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Monday, December 16, Basintale highlighted that Dr. Bawumia trailed the NDC by nearly 2 million votes, making it impossible for him to challenge the outcome.

Drawing comparisons with the 2016 elections, Basintale praised former President John Mahama for prioritising peace despite political tensions at the time.

He recalled, “In the 2024 elections, we didn’t have those tensions; 2016 was a tough one. But Mahama came out and said, ‘I love Ghana; let peace prevail.’”

According to Basintale, the NDC delivered a decisive victory in 2024, describing the election results as a “disaster” for the NPP.

He lauded the NDC’s election team for their performance, noting that results from the party’s strongholds sealed Dr. Bawumia’s fate.

“The NDC was in a very comfortable lead, so there was nothing Dr. Bawumia could have held on to,” Basintale said, adding, “If I were him, I’d advise myself not to return to continue the struggle.”

Basintale concluded by affirming that the NPP’s defeat in 2024 was inevitable, given the election trends and voter sentiments.
