Bawumia concedes defeat, congratulates President-Elect John Mahama

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has officially conceded defeat in the 2024 presidential elections, congratulating former President John Dramani Mahama on his victory.

Dr. Bawumia made the concession during a news conference held at his residence on Sunday, where he acknowledged the decisive outcome of the elections in favour of Mr. Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In his remarks, the Vice President stated:
“Following the elections, Ghanaians have been sitting on tenterhooks awaiting the results. Our data indicates that our former president has won the presidency decisively. They have also won the parliamentary majority.”

He further noted that he had personally called former President Mahama to offer his congratulations, saying, “The people of Ghana have spoken. They have voted for change, and we all respect that.”

Dr. Bawumia explained that he chose to make his concession speech before the Electoral Commission’s official declaration to help maintain peace and avoid unnecessary tension, emphasising, “Ghana is more important than our individual interests.”

This gesture of statesmanship highlights the vice president’s commitment to upholding Ghana’s democratic values and ensuring a smooth transition of power.

The concession comes as Ghanaians await the official announcement of results from the Electoral Commission.
