Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has commissioned the 1,072-unit Kpone Affordable Housing Project, completing Phases 1-3 of the initiative while also breaking ground for Phase 4, set to deliver 800 additional units.
Speaking at the event on Monday, November 25, 2024, Dr. Bawumia reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing Ghana’s 1.8 million housing deficit, emphasising the need for public-private partnerships (PPP) and announcing plans for a “Decade of Housing Programme” to tackle the crisis.
“The lack of robust, long-term mortgage financing has made homeownership challenging for many Ghanaians. Through PPPs and innovative funding models like the National Home Ownership Fund, we’re building a path to affordable housing,” he stated.
The Kpone project, initiated in 2006 under former President Kufuor but stalled during subsequent administrations, has been revived under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government. It is part of broader efforts that have delivered over 10,000 homes since 2017, including units for security personnel and ongoing completions of legacy projects like the Adenta SHC flats and Saglemi units.
Minister of Works and Housing Kojo Oppong Nkrumah praised the project as a milestone in bridging Ghana’s housing gap. He noted the professionalism of contractors and TDC’s leadership, adding that the project reflects the government’s commitment to economic growth and job creation through infrastructure development.
Dr. Bawumia also inspected ongoing work at the nearby National Housing Fund (NHF) estates, which will add 534 homes to Ghana’s housing stock. Promising continued efforts if given the mandate in the upcoming elections, he pledged to expand housing initiatives, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth.
With Phase 4 of the Kpone Affordable Housing Project underway, the total units in the enclave will rise to 1,872, signalling a significant step in addressing Ghana’s housing needs.
