Bawumia Champions Democracy as Africa’s Best Path to Prosperity

Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reiterated his unwavering belief in democracy, emphasising its critical role in ensuring freedom, stability, and national progress.

Speaking in Nigeria on January 27, 2025, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the flaws inherent in democratic systems but reaffirmed their superiority over all other forms of governance.

In his speech, Dr. Bawumia referenced Winston Churchill’s famous quote: “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others,” to highlight the pragmatic value of democracy in ensuring individual liberties and fostering a balanced government.

“It’s not a perfect system, but it’s the best we’ve got,” he stated, underlining the importance of democratic processes in promoting accountability, transparency, and good governance.

Dr. Bawumia also pointed to a 2023 Open Society Barometer report, which revealed that 92% of Nigerians believe living in a democratic society is important, and 69% prefer democracy to other forms of government.

“These findings should leave no doubt that the Nigerian people have embraced democracy,” he said, praising the country’s commitment to democratic ideals even amid ongoing challenges.

Dr. Bawumia urged African nations to strengthen their democratic institutions, stressing that democracy is key to unlocking greater prosperity and political stability across the continent.

“Let us invest in and fortify our democratic processes, for it is through inclusive governance that we will achieve lasting success,” he concluded, calling on African leaders to ensure that democracy serves the needs of all citizens.
