The Spokesperson for the flagbearer of Convention People’s Party (CPP) Campaign Team, Sylvester Sarpong has called for the immediate resignation of Dr. Ernest Addison, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, over the institution’s unprecedented ¢60.8 billion loss.
Sylvester Soprano Sarpong, described the loss as an “economic disaster” caused by poor leadership and mismanagement, accusing the governor of betraying the trust of Ghanaian taxpayers.
“Dr. Allison’s tenure has been catastrophic. This loss is not just a number; it represents the suffering of millions of Ghanaians, many of whom live in poverty and struggle to afford basic needs,” Sarpong stated in a press release.
Sarpong condemned the decision to construct a $250 million headquarters for the Bank of Ghana, describing it as a glaring example of misplaced priorities.
“How do you justify spending millions on a luxury office when over 20 million Ghanaians live in poverty? This is an insult to every Ghanaian struggling to survive,” he said.
He highlighted the pressing needs of the nation, including proper healthcare, housing, and education, which could have been prioritised over the lavish project.
The spokesperson also pointed to Dr. Addison’s role in the collapse of 13 banks and financial institutions, which led to 5,000 job losses and devastated families across the country.
“The closure of these institutions under Dr. Addison’s watch reflects his inability to safeguard the financial sector. Thousands of lives have been ruined, yet he remains at the helm,” Sarpong lamented.
The statement criticised Ghana’s leadership for allowing such failures to persist without consequence.
According to Sylvester Sarpong, the government’s failure to hold Dr. Addison accountable has eroded public trust in the country’s financial systems.
“This culture of impunity is unacceptable. Leaders who mismanage public funds and jeopardise livelihoods must face the consequences,” he said, urging the government to launch an investigation into the governor’s tenure.
Sarpong emphasised the Nana Frimpomaa Campaign’s vision of leadership grounded in transparency and accountability, vowing to restore faith in governance if elected.
“The Bank of Ghana must serve the people, not betray them. We demand Dr. Addison’s resignation and a commitment to better governance moving forward,” he concluded.
Sylvester Sarpong’s call adds to growing public outcry over the financial management of the Bank of Ghana, with many Ghanaians questioning the government’s silence on the issue.
