Baba Sadiq declared MP-Elect for Okaikwei Central

Abdulai Abu Baba Abubakar Sadiq, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Okaikwei Central, has emerged as the Member of Parliament-elect, defeating the incumbent, Patrick Yaw Boamah of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in a closely contested 2024 general election.

Initial results suggested Patrick Boamah had retained the seat, but protests from the NDC led the Electoral Commission (EC) to revisit the figures.

Following a thorough review, Baba Sadiq was declared the winner with 15,383 votes, narrowly surpassing Boamah’s 14,949 votes.

The controversy stemmed from anomalies identified in 31 pink sheets, which delayed the collation process.

The EC responded by consulting its Greater Accra Regional Director and sealing the disputed pink sheets in a ballot box for further verification.

The process was marred by confusion and chaos, particularly at the Ansurudeen Islamic School polling station, where disagreements over space led to the destruction of voting booths.

A presiding officer’s request to reduce the number of polling agents exacerbated tensions, contributing to delays.

The NDC argued that two-thirds of the polling station results—representing 78 percent of the total—were sufficient for declaring a winner. While the NPP contested this approach, its representatives remained silent during the final discussions.

Despite the challenges, the EC completed the collation process and confirmed Baba Sadiq’s victory.

This result marks a significant gain for the NDC in Okaikwei Central, ending Patrick Boamah’s tenure as the constituency’s MP.

Baba Sadiq’s win underscores the NDC’s growing influence in a traditionally contested seat. His victory is seen as a reflection of the electorate’s desire for change, adding to the party’s momentum in the Greater Accra Region.
