ATM fraud in Anambra: Visually impaired widow falls victim to card swap scheme

A heart-wrenching case of ATM fraud has surfaced in Nnewi, Anambra State, where a young woman deceived a visually impaired widow and syphoned millions of naira from her bank account.

The incident, captured on a 42-second CCTV clip, shows the elderly widow struggling to navigate the ATM due to her visual impairment. Seeking help, she approached the suspect, who pretended to assist but instead swapped the widow’s ATM card with an expired one after obtaining her PIN.

Shortly after the exchange, the widow began receiving debit alerts as her account was swiftly emptied.

The CCTV footage, now viral on social media, has ignited widespread condemnation, with many calling for heightened vigilance at ATMs, especially for vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and persons with disabilities.

Eyewitnesses and concerned community members are urging the public to exercise caution when conducting financial transactions and to seek assistance only from trusted individuals or bank staff.

The fraudulent act has prompted appeals to security agencies to investigate the case and apprehend the perpetrator. Advocacy groups have also reiterated the importance of installing more security measures at ATM points to protect users from such predatory schemes.

The incident underscores the pressing need for collective efforts to safeguard vulnerable populations from financial exploitation.
