Armah-Kofi Buah Unveils Three Key Initiatives to Combat Galamsey

Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the Minister-Designate for Lands and Natural Resources, has announced three groundbreaking initiatives aimed at tackling illegal mining, also known as “galamsey,” and restoring Ghana’s ecological balance.

Speaking before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 27, 2025, Buah introduced the Blue Water Initiative, Tree for Life Initiative, and Restore Ghana Initiative, which he believes will help rejuvenate the country’s forest reserves and water bodies impacted by illegal mining activities.

The Blue Water Initiative aims to rehabilitate areas degraded by galamsey by transforming them into centres of both economic and ecological recovery.

Buah also emphasised the importance of intensifying reforestation efforts through the Tree for Life Initiative and promoting nationwide afforestation.

Additionally, the Restore Ghana Initiative will focus on rehabilitating land and water systems adversely affected by illegal mining.

Buah pledged that his administration would work to eliminate mining in forest reserves by ensuring the repeal of Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462, which currently allows mining in these areas.

He emphasised that the government would not issue any more mining licenses in forest reserves moving forward.
