In a surprising turn of events, Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh has publicly disagreed with Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin’s recent endorsement of John Dramani Mahama (JM) for the upcoming presidential election.
“Spent Horse” Comment Sparks Controversy
Annoh-Dompreh, who is also the Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to voice his disapproval. In his post, he stated, “Thank you, Mr. Speaker: we prefer a new president (Dr. Bawumia) to a spent horse (JM)… sir. I can’t agree with you on JM, Mr. Speaker; our country must progress!”
Bagbin’s Endorsement of JM
The disagreement stems from Speaker Bagbin’s endorsement of Mahama, which he linked to the number 8, the position Mahama secured on the presidential election ballot. Bagbin had earlier posted on Facebook, “8 is excellence. Don’t break it. Choose it!” suggesting that Mahama’s placement on the ballot symbolised good fortune.
Divided Opinions
Annoh-Dompreh’s public remarks illustrate the growing political divide ahead of the 2024 elections. While Speaker Bagbin views Mahama as a symbol of excellence and continuity, Annoh-Dompreh argues that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia represents a new era of leadership and progress for Ghana.
This clash of opinions underscores the ongoing debate within Ghana’s political circles as the country heads into a highly anticipated election season.
