Akufo-Addo’s Final SONA: “I Leave Behind a Ghana That Is Working”

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed confidence in Ghana’s progress under his leadership, declaring that he is leaving office with a nation that is “working.”

Delivering his final State of the Nation Address (SONA) to Parliament on January 3, 2025, the outgoing president reflected on his tenure, highlighting achievements and dismissing concerns about the country’s financial stability.

President Akufo-Addo used the occasion to highlight significant strides made in various sectors during his administration, including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and governance.

“The Ghana I hand over today is one that is thriving, resilient, and poised for further development,” he said. “We have made transformative progress, despite facing immense global and domestic challenges.”

Among the key achievements cited was the Free Senior High School (SHS) program, which he described as a game-changer for education.

He also mentioned advancements in healthcare infrastructure through the Agenda 111 project, improvements in the energy sector, and widespread digitisation initiatives that have modernised public service delivery.

The President addressed concerns about Ghana’s economic challenges, including the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and global inflationary pressures.

He noted that the government’s fiscal measures have resulted in a steady economic rebound.

“Our economy is recovering steadily. It is resilient, and the foundations laid will enable future administrations to build upon it for sustained growth,” he remarked.

President Akufo-Addo dismissed claims by critics that Ghana is financially unstable. Labelling such assertions as “baseless propaganda,” he assured Ghanaians that the nation remains on a solid footing.

“To those who propagate the notion that Ghana is broke, let me state clearly: our economy is far from broken. It is a strong, functioning system capable of supporting the aspirations of our people,” he affirmed.

The President expressed pride in the stability and unity of Ghana, describing it as a hallmark of his administration.

He highlighted the protection of democratic principles and the rule of law as enduring legacies.

“I leave a Ghana that is secure, united, and rooted in democratic governance. This is the Ghana I am proud to hand over,” he said.

As he concluded his final address, President Akufo-Addo urged the incoming administration to continue building on the foundation laid during his tenure. He expressed optimism about the country’s potential to achieve greater heights.

“I am confident that the work we have done together will inspire the next chapter of Ghana’s development. I step aside with the conviction that the best days of our nation are still ahead,” he said.
