President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially commissioned the Flower Pot Interchange in Accra, marking a major milestone in Ghana’s efforts to modernise its road infrastructure and alleviate chronic traffic congestion.
The interchange, situated along the North and South corridors of the Tema Motorway, is set to revolutionise traffic flow, reduce travel times, and improve connectivity for commuters navigating one of Accra’s busiest routes.
The Flower Pot Interchange features cutting-edge engineering, including:
An 802-meter dual carriageway viaduct paved with durable asphaltic concrete.
A 140-meter ramp leading from Shiashie onto the viaduct towards Airport Hills.
An 80-meter ramp connecting the viaduct to the highway heading to Tema.
A new road passes through the old East Legon tunnel.
Additional facilities include pedestrian walkways, streetlights, and advanced traffic signals, ensuring both safety and ease of movement for all users.
The project, executed by China Railway No. 5 Engineering Ghana Limited with oversight from Deoke Consult Ltd, began in March 2017 and was completed over 93 months. Funded at a cost of GHS 677.8 million by Afrexim Bank and the Government of Ghana, the interchange reflects the government’s focus on addressing the challenges of urban mobility.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, President Akufo-Addo emphasised the transformative impact of the interchange and the importance of its long-term upkeep.
“This project demonstrates our commitment to building a modern Ghana where traffic bottlenecks are a thing of the past. I urge all stakeholders to protect and maintain this interchange for the benefit of future generations,” he said.
The interchange is expected to address the persistent gridlock along the Tema Motorway corridor, a critical artery for trade and daily commutes. By improving traffic flow, the project also enhances economic activity in the surrounding areas, contributing to Ghana’s broader development goals.
The Flower Pot Interchange joins other landmark road projects under the Akufo-Addo administration, including the Pokuase, Tema Motorway Phase I, and Obetsebi Lamptey interchanges, solidifying the government’s reputation for delivering transformative infrastructure.
As Accra residents prepare to enjoy smoother commutes and reduced travel times, the Flower Pot Interchange stands as a testament to the potential of well-executed urban infrastructure to drive national progress.
