Akandoh Laments: ‘Delay Cost Me Time and Money!’

In an unexpected turn of events, the vetting of Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Member of Parliament for Juaboso and Minister of Health nominee, faced an unforeseen delay that left him disheartened and financially burdened.

Appearing before an investigative committee to recount the chaotic sequence of events, Mr. Akandoh detailed how the abrupt postponement of his vetting process on Thursday, January 30, led to significant inconvenience.

The minister nominee had been formally invited to appear before the Appointments Committee on the designated date of January 30. However, a sudden adjustment to the schedule created a wave of confusion.

“On the morning of the 30th, I called the clerk to the committee to send me the program timetable. When she did, I realised my name had been moved from the 30th to the 31st,” Mr. Akandoh explained.

Alarmed by the lack of prior notice, he promptly sought clarification. Upon contacting the clerk, he was assured that despite the rescheduling on paper, he was still expected to be vetted that same day.

Still unconvinced, the Juaboso MP reached out to the leadership of the committee to express his concerns.

He highlighted the logistical difficulties this sudden change posed, particularly the fact that numerous distinguished guests, including paramount chiefs, had already made their way to Accra to witness the process.

“Both sides of the committee assured me that I was going to be vetted that day,” he reiterated.

Mr. Akandoh proceeded with his preparations and patiently waited in the holding room. Hours later, he was finally summoned to the vetting chamber. As he settled into his seat, just as the chairman was about to administer the oath, an unexpected wave of opposition arose from minority members of the committee.

“Immediately after the minister nominee for transport was vetted, I took my seat, and the chairman instructed that the oath be administered. That was when I saw minority members protesting, saying they wouldn’t agree. That was where everything started,” he recounted, his voice laced with frustration.

The sudden uproar halted the proceedings, leaving Mr. Akandoh in a state of disbelief. His long-anticipated vetting had been derailed at the eleventh hour, throwing his carefully laid-out plans into disarray.

Beyond the personal disappointment, Mr. Akandoh lamented the financial toll the delay had inflicted upon him.

“I was very disappointed because I had to make room for my guests, including paramount chiefs. There were quite a number of them, and the delay caused a lot of inconveniences and cost me a lot of money,” he lamented.

The frustration was palpable. The unexpected changes not only disrupted his schedule but also strained relationships with key dignitaries who had travelled at his invitation.

The incident underscores a broader concern about procedural inefficiencies that could have far-reaching implications for governance.

Mr. Akandoh’s ordeal highlights the need for clarity and transparency in parliamentary vetting processes. The abrupt changes and ensuing opposition suggest a deeper issue within the Appointments Committee that warrants scrutiny.

The investigative committee probing the disturbances will likely explore ways to prevent such occurrences in the future.
