Ablakwa Questions GHS60 Million Transfer to Presidency Days Before Handover
The Member of Parliament for North Tongu and Chairman of the ‘Operation Recover All Loot’ (ORAL) initiative, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has raised concerns over a recent transfer of GHS60 million to the Office of the President for “special operations.”
In a statement shared on Facebook, Mr. Ablakwa disclosed that the transfer was made on December 23, 2024, at 4:38 pm, just days before President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to hand over power to President-elect John Dramani Mahama.
Describing the expenditure as profligate, Mr. Ablakwa demanded explanations from the outgoing president, questioning why such funds should be allocated to “special operations” in the final days of his administration.
“Why has a colossal GHS60 million been transferred to the Office of the President for so-called ‘special operations’ with just a few days left for President Akufo-Addo to hand over?” he wrote.
He criticised the prioritisation of this expenditure over pressing national issues, such as arrears owed to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), the Free Senior High School Secretariat, Independent Power Producers (IPPs), and the Nation Builders Corps (NaBCo).
Mr. Ablakwa expressed frustration with what he described as attempts by the outgoing administration to drain national resources on questionable projects and expenditures.
“It’s most depressing that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government seems hell-bent on emptying the national coffers on extremely questionable and wasteful expenditures before the Mahama administration takes over,” he lamented.
He further called for urgent legislative reforms to prevent such occurrences in the future, advocating for laws to regulate excessive spending, dubious contracts, and mass recruitments during transitional periods.
