Bawumia to unveil Africa’s first e-health system in landmark digital healthcare revolution

On Wednesday, October 16, 2024, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who also serves as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), will unveil the government’s latest digital innovation—E-Health.

This initiative marks a major leap forward in modernising Ghana’s healthcare system by transitioning patient record management from analogue to electronic formats.

The Akufo-Addo administration, with significant backing from Dr. Bawumia, has been at the forefront of digital healthcare transformation in Ghana. Key projects already implemented include the widely praised drone medical delivery service, which provides life-saving medical supplies to remote areas, and the E-Pharmacy platform, enabling Ghanaians to order medications online with ease.

E-Health, the first of its kind in Africa, is being rolled out by Lightwave e-Health Solutions in partnership with the Ministry of Health. It aims to digitise patient records across teaching, regional, and district hospitals, creating an integrated system that allows seamless access to medical data nationwide. Patients will no longer need to carry their physical medical files when moving between hospitals, as the system ensures their records are accessible to healthcare professionals anywhere in the country.

This digital solution goes beyond just patient records; it integrates Ghana’s Disease Surveillance Unit protocols into the platform, allowing for real-time monitoring and response to public health issues. The introduction of E-Health underscores the government’s commitment to revolutionising healthcare delivery, improving efficiency, and enhancing patient safety.

The E-Health initiative is the latest in a series of healthcare improvements under the NPP government over the past seven years, including the deployment of ambulances across constituencies, the expansion of public hospitals, and the introduction of the drone service delivering essential drugs to over 2,000 hospitals.

The launch of E-Health represents a landmark moment in Ghana’s healthcare journey, equipping healthcare professionals with real-time access to comprehensive patient data and significantly enhancing decision-making and the quality of care provided across the country.
