EC assures NDC of online re-exhibition of corrected voters register ahead of 2024 elections

The Electoral Commission (EC) has assured the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that it will re-exhibit the corrected Provisional Voters Register (PVR) online before the final version is printed for the 2024 general elections.

This decision comes after the NDC held a nationwide protest, dubbed ‘Enough is Enough,’ demanding corrections to errors in the provisional register and calling for a forensic audit of the EC’s IT system.

During the protest, NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah presented a petition to the EC, citing concerns such as illegal voter transfers, deleted names, incomplete data, and alleged issues with the Commission’s IT system.

In response, the EC acknowledged the NDC’s concerns and clarified its plan to re-exhibit the PVR online.

While the Commission expressed no opposition to a physical exhibition at over 40,000 centres, it emphasised that time constraints would make such a move impractical.

The EC noted that it would take approximately four weeks to print and distribute the corrected register, a timeframe that is difficult to manage with the elections drawing near.

“The Commission intends to implement an online exhibition of the PVR at no cost to registered voters. Voters will be able to report any anomalies with their details within a specific timeframe, which will be communicated to the public. The voter register will remain available online until election day,” the EC stated.

Regarding the NDC’s demand for a forensic audit of its IT system, the EC said that such a step was not fully warranted at this time.

“The Commission believes that the legal and administrative processes established to address issues with the PVR have not been fully exhausted, and therefore the call for a forensic audit is not justified. We encourage the public to trust the EC in fulfilling its mandate,” the Commission noted.

As the 2024 general elections approach, the EC is committed to ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the voter register, with this online re-exhibition seen as a key step in addressing concerns raised by the NDC and the general public.
