I made a request to visit Nana Addo but it didn’t work out – DKB

Ghanaian comedian Derrick Kobina Bonney, popularly known as DKB, has opened up about his unsuccessful attempt to meet President Nana Akufo-Addo.

During an interview with Korfa on Joy FM’s Cosmopolitan Mix, DKB expressed frustration over the failed meeting, attributing the mishap to the intermediaries who were supposed to facilitate the meeting.

“I made a request to visit Nana Addo at the Flagstaff House, but it didn’t seem to work out. I don’t know why, but the people involved didn’t make it materialise,” DKB explained.

Despite this setback, DKB takes pride in being the only comedian to have performed for all the Presidents of Ghana, showcasing his widespread appeal across the nation’s leadership.

While DKB’s attempt to connect with President Akufo-Addo fell through, his political engagements have taken a new turn.

The comedian is now openly supporting the Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, ahead of the December 7, 2024 election.

DKB recently performed at the launch of the NDC’s Youth Manifesto soirée on August 12, 2024, held at the Bukom Boxing Arena, where he was thrilled by Mahama’s response to his comedy.

“It was very pleasant and shocking to me when John Mahama repeated two of my jokes on stage. I couldn’t sleep till morning. He’s captured my heart, and right now I’m a presidential comedian,” DKB said, clearly moved by the experience. This endorsement has strengthened his resolve to support Mahama’s presidential campaign.

DKB further expressed his gratitude for Mahama’s recognition of his work, pledging to reciprocate by campaigning for him.

“It was one huge endorsement in my whole career, and I have been through a lot in this country, so if a president is talking about your joke and how he loves your joke, the only thing you can also do is help him become president and realise his dream. So right now, I am fully pushing John Mahama. It doesn’t mean I hate NPP,” he clarified, highlighting his personal commitment rather than political animosity.

DKB is not alone in the creative arts community in declaring support for the NDC ahead of the upcoming elections. Several other prominent figures, including Big Akwes, Christiana Awuni, Mercy Asiedu, Jack Alolome, and Kofi Okyere Darko, have also publicly endorsed the NDC, adding their voices and influence to the political discourse in Ghana.
