I am deeply honoured as the chosen running mate of NPP – NAPO

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also referred to as “NAPO,” the running mate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 presidential election, has thanked Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flag bearer, for nominating him.

“I am incredibly honoured to be the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) official running mate today. Hours after receiving the party’s endorsement for running mate, he said in a statement, “I am humbled to be nominated by our distinguished flag bearer, H.E. Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and endorsed unanimously by the National Council in accordance with the provisions of the NPP Constitution.”

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh was unanimously approved by the NPP National Council to be Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate in the 2024 presidential contest.

The announcement was made by the party’s general secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, following the conclusion of the emergency meeting of the National Council.

The news broke last week that Dr. Bawumia had a meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, telling him that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Kumasi Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, was his preference.

Dr. Bawumia officially nominated Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) as his running mate on Monday, July 1, 2024, to the national officers of the NPP.

Dr. Bawumia and the Majority Caucus in Parliament also met in a similar fashion.

The NPP constitution’s Article 12(b) specifies that the Party’s presidential candidate, or flag bearer, would choose the vice presidential candidate, or running mate, after consulting with the National Council. The running mate must be a recognised and involved member of the party for a minimum of five (5) years.

In a July 4, 2024, statement, Dr. Opoku-Prempeh promised that he would be ready and willing to collaborate with the flagbearer to carry out his ambitious plan to take Ghana to new heights.

“I see this nomination as an obligation to fulfil a call to greater service, sacrifice, and responsibility. “I realise the importance of my selection and do not take it lightly because the NPP is full of intelligent people,” the running mate for the party said. “I call on all our members to join hands as we collectively strive to achieve our ambitious goal of transforming Ghana into a prosperous nation.”

In addition, he thanked President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the National Council, and the party’s grassroots members for their everlasting belief in him and support.

“Once again, Mr. President, I express my gratitude for giving me the chance to hold two esteemed cabinet positions. I will always be appreciative,” Dr. Opoku-Prempeh said.
