The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has requested permission from John Dramani Mahama, the former president and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to allow him to assume the role of president since he has already held it.
In contrast to the previous president, who was limited to one term, he claims to be eligible for two terms.
Dr. Bawumia adds that since they are both from the North, it would be fitting for him to become president.
On Sunday, May 19, he made this statement while visiting with Wa Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV at his palace in Wa.
“Myself and my main opponent [John Dramani Mahama] are all your children,” Dr. Bawumia declared. Since he has served as president previously and I have not, we are both from the North. I have advised John Dramani Mahama, my elder brother, to be patient with me so that I can serve as president of this nation as well.
“If the presidency is coming home, then we should have it for eight years rather than four years. I will be able to be president for eight years, while he can only be president for four.”
