Voter Identity (ID) card replacement will be provided free of charge to individuals impacted by the Akosombo dam leak, according to the Election Commission (EC).
This announcement is in reaction to the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey, who urged the EC to replace voter ID cards that victims of the recent Akosombo dam spillage lost for free.
At a press conference on Thursday, May 16, Mr. Kwetey emphasised the gravity of the situation and urged the EC to act quickly and humanely.
The EC highlighted in a statement issued that same day that it is a responsible body and will assist all eligible voters in taking part in the upcoming general election.
“It is intended to fulfil that duty by replacing voter ID cards, which is set to begin on May 30, 2024,” the statement continued.
“Recognising the untold hardships and economic loss suffered by victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage, we agree with Fifi Kwetey of the NDC to support them,” the EC said in response to Mr. Kwetey’s proposal.
“In a show of support and goodwill, the commission is pleased to announce that voter ID cards for those affected by the Akosombo dam spill will be replaced at no cost to them.”
