I’ll take a different tack in the battle against illegal mining – Mahama

National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama, a former president, believes that if reelected, he will take a different tack in the fight against illegal mining.

He claims, for example, that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) current, tough position in the battle against illegal mining is untenable.

He claimed that this had simply served to exacerbate the crisis and increase the financial gain for task force teams and political players involved.

Considering this, he requests that ministers, government appointees, and officials refrain from working in the mining industry if they wish to continue serving in his administration upon reelection.

Speaking on the topic of “Charting our courtesy mining vision and the future of illegal mining” at the third annual Transformational Dialogue on small-scale mining at Fiapre near Sunyani on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, Mr. Mahama contended that the NPP government’s “fight” against illegal mining was “unsustainable.”

Mr. Mahama declared that no state minister, government appointment, or official would be permitted to enter the mining industry if he were to be re-elected.

He clarified that in his administration, if a minister of state or a top administrator of a city, district, or other government office engaged in mining activities, they would be asked to step down and focus only on their mining endeavors.

Mr. Mahama stated, “You either choose to be a businessperson in the mining industry or you choose to be a public officer.”

According to Mr. Mahama, the “gold for oil deal” would be looked into by the incoming NDC government in order to identify the parties to this “so-called barter agreement.”

We’ll look into the Gold and Oil programme and identify the parties profiting from this fictitious barter arrangement.

He stated, “I’ve been told by reports that Ghana isn’t able to keep up with its delivery of gold under the programme, which suggests that a new debt burden is being created.”
