‘We Don’t Steal Data’ – MTN Ghana CEO Addresses Public Concerns

The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, has firmly dismissed allegations that the telecom operator is involved in the theft or manipulation of customers’ data amid growing public concern over the rapid depletion of data bundles.

His comments come in response to increasing complaints from subscribers who say their data bundles are disappearing faster than expected, with some users reporting unexplained reductions in their balances.

Addressing the issue on Friday, April 17, Mr Blewett rejected the claims outright, insisting that MTN has no incentive to engage in such practices, as doing so would ultimately erode customer trust and drive users away from the network.

“There’s zero incentive for MTN to steal data from you,” he stated. “Because it will just chase people away. It’s not something we do; it’s not part of our values.”

Instead, he attributed the perceived “loss” of data to changing digital consumption habits, pointing out that modern smartphone usage has significantly increased how quickly data is consumed.

He explained that background activities such as automatic app updates, continuous syncing of applications, and the rising demand for high-definition video streaming are key drivers of higher data usage among customers—often without their direct awareness.

Mr Blewett further urged subscribers to take greater control of their data consumption by actively monitoring app activity and adjusting device settings, particularly video quality options, to manage usage more effectively.

He stressed that responsible usage is increasingly important in a digital environment where smartphones continuously consume data in the background, often contributing to faster-than-expected depletion of bundles.

The MTN Ghana CEO reiterated that the company remains committed to transparency and customer trust, encouraging users to better understand how their devices and applications affect data consumption patterns.
