We Want To Produce Digitally Competent Graduates- UG Vice Chancellor

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to producing digitally competent graduates, as she commended Ecobank Ghana for fulfilling its pledge to donate 300 laptops under the “One Student, One Laptop” (1S1L) initiative.

Speaking at the presentation of the final batch of laptops at Legon, Prof. Amfo described Ecobank’s gesture as a model of commitment and partnership, noting that the bank had delivered fully on its three-year promise.

“When we started this journey, Ecobank made a commitment to deliver 300 laptops—and they have kept their word,” she said.

The Vice-Chancellor revealed that the initiative was born out of challenges experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many students struggled to participate in online learning due to lack of devices.

“At the time, we couldn’t achieve full participation because many students simply did not have access to laptops. Clearly, there was a need,” she explained.

Prof. Amfo stressed that in today’s world, digital literacy is no longer optional for university graduates.

“No matter what you study, you must leave the University of Ghana as a digitally savvy graduate,” she emphasised.

She noted that while training programmes exist, owning a personal device significantly enhances learning, allowing students to explore, practise, and fully utilise digital tools.

Beyond laptop distribution, the Vice-Chancellor highlighted additional efforts by the university to improve digital access, including the expansion of computer laboratories to support the growing number of computer-based examinations.

“We cannot have queues of students waiting to take exams. We have worked to equip our labs to address this,” she said.

Prof. Amfo underscored the importance of partnerships in achieving the university’s strategic goals, particularly in delivering a transformative student experience and strengthening institutional collaboration.

“We cannot do this alone. With partnerships, we are able to deliver effectively and faster,” she stated.

She added that the university continues to seek deeper collaboration with industry, especially in areas such as internships and practical training.

“There is no curriculum that can fully prepare students for the job market without industry involvement. We must work together,” she noted.

The Vice-Chancellor also encouraged alumni to contribute to student development by returning to the classroom to share practical experiences.

“When students interact with professionals who have been in the field, it inspires and motivates them,” she said.

Expressing appreciation to Ecobank, Prof. Amfo described the partnership as instrumental in advancing the university’s vision.

“What you have done over the past three years has helped us deliver on our priorities. We are extremely grateful,” she said.

She hinted at opportunities for expanded collaboration, noting that with strong institutional ties, both the university and Ecobank stand to benefit.
