Ecobank Ghana has fulfilled its commitment to the University of Ghana’s flagship “One Student, One Laptop” (1S1L) initiative with the donation of a final batch of 100 laptops, bringing its total contribution to 300 devices over three years.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony on the Legon campus, Managing Director of Ecobank Ghana Abena Osei-Poku described the moment as both “meaningful” and “fulfilling”, noting her personal connection to the university.

“Today’s ceremony marks the final instalment of Ecobank’s commitment… and we are proud to have honoured our pledge of delivering 300 laptops over a three-year period,” she said.

The donation forms part of Ecobank’s broader commitment to supporting digital transformation and education across the continent.

According to Mrs Osei-Poku, access to digital tools has become essential for students navigating modern academic and professional environments.

“Access to digital tools is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity, especially for students preparing for the world of work and innovation,” she emphasised.

She added that the bank’s support is rooted in the belief that technology-enabled education is a key driver of national and continental development.

Ecobank’s intervention has already made a significant difference, particularly for students who previously lacked access to personal computers.

The managing director expressed optimism that the final batch of laptops would further expand opportunities for beneficiaries.

“It is our hope that this will empower more students to pursue their academic goals with confidence and dignity—as every student deserves,” she said.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, praised Ecobank for staying true to its commitment, describing the donation as critical to enhancing the student experience.

“When we started this journey, Ecobank made a promise—and they have kept their word,” she noted.

She explained that the 1S1L initiative was inspired by lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, which exposed significant gaps in students’ access to digital learning tools.

“No matter what you study, you must leave this university as a digitally savvy graduate,” she stressed.

Chairman of the 1S1L Committee, Prof. Peter Quartey, revealed that Ecobank’s contribution accounts for about 30 per cent of all laptops received under the initiative, underscoring the bank’s major role in the programme’s success.

He disclosed that the initiative includes plans to establish a laptop assembly plant to provide devices at subsidised rates for students who may not qualify for free laptops.

Mrs Osei-Poku reaffirmed Ecobank’s long-standing partnership with the university, highlighting the bank’s deployment of digital payment and collection systems to support students, faculty, and the broader university community.

She stressed that Ecobank’s corporate mission goes beyond profitability to creating lasting social impact.

“Supporting education, youth development, and digital inclusion remains a core pillar of our corporate social responsibility,” she said.

Addressing students who will receive the laptops, the Ecobank MD encouraged them to take full advantage of the opportunity.

“Use these tools not only to excel academically, but to develop the skills and mindset needed to succeed in the global world of work,” she urged.
