VIDEO: Bawumia’s intention to review Ghana’s constitution a step in right direction- Koku Anyidoho

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Atta Mills institute, Samuel Koku Anyidoho has applauded the Vice President and the Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia over his intentions to review Ghana’s Constitution should he become a president.

According to him, one of the major changes late President Fiifi Atta Mills wanted to do was to review the constitution and it is something the institute has been championing since the death of Late President Mills.

He emphasized that, what excites the institute listening to the flagbearer rolling out his policy plan at UPSA should he become a president was to the review the constitution and the fact that he wants to reduce the powers of the executive; to him that was the key point they as an institution were interested in.

“Am a Christian, the bible is where I draw my power and authority from, so if there is something fundamentally wrong with the bible then it means there will be something fundamentally wrong with my Christianity”, Koku added.

The constitution is the bible of the nation and to a extend that we all agree that there are somethings that are fundamentally wrong as it stands now then there is a need to review because it has already served its purpose.

Koku Anyidoho said he supports the Dr. Bawumia’s hundred percent over his vision.

He stated categorically clear that the Atta-Mills Institute has been very consistent in fighting the CRC white Paper to see the light of day so if a Presidential Candidate is saying he will review the 1992 constitution, it is in tandem with our clarion call so it will be hypocritical not to support it.

Samuel Koku Anyidoho made these statements in an interview with Kofi Nkansah from puretvonline.com

BACKGROUND

The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has emphasized that if given the mandate as Ghana’s next president, he will commit to a review of the 1992 Constitution.

According to the New Patriotic Party’s presidential candidate, not only will he review the Constitution but he will also support the amendment of the provision of ex-gratia for Article 71 officeholders, the rights of dual citizens, the powers of the president, amongst others.

“I am committed to the process to amend the 1992 Constitution through extensive public consultation, with key emphasis on issues such as ex-gratia, the rights of dual citizens, election of MMDCEs to deepen decentralization, and empowering  institutions while reducing the power of the President” he pledged.

“The current constitution was designed mainly for political stability and it has achieved that. We need to amend it with the help of Parliament to align it more for national development,” he told the gathering.

He made these remarks when addressing the Ghanaian public at the Kofi Ohene Konadu Auditorium at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, on Wednesday, February 7, 2024.
