The Minister of the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has revealed that more than 4,000 firearms have been voluntarily handed over by civilians as part of the government’s gun amnesty programme.
Muntaka explained that prior to the official amnesty period, authorities had already retrieved about 11,000 firearms from civilians. The launch of the amnesty encouraged many more individuals to surrender weapons legally.
Speaking on Hot Issues on Sunday, March 15, 2026, the minister said, “That’s why we came in with the amnesty. And when we rolled out the amnesty period, the statistics showed that we were able to retrieve over 4,000 guns in the hands of civilians.”

Muntaka added that the collected firearms are currently being documented and marked by security authorities in preparation for their eventual destruction.
The minister noted that the gun amnesty is part of a broader strategy by the government to curb the proliferation of illegal arms and enhance public safety nationwide.
He added that the programme has significantly helped to remove unlicensed firearms from circulation, supporting the ongoing efforts of security agencies to combat violent crime and improve community security across Ghana.
The Ministry of the Interior, on January 17, extended the Gun Amnesty Programme to January 30, 2026, as part of government efforts to curb the proliferation of illicit and unregistered firearms in the country.
The programme, which was declared on November 18, 2025, initially took effect on December 1, 2025, and was scheduled to end on January 15, 2026.
