Christian Council of Ghana Condemns Violence at Agona Swedru Schools’ Athletics Games

The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has expressed deep concern over violent incidents that disrupted the District Schools Athletics Games held in Agona Swedru on February 19, 2026.

In a statement issued by its general secretary, Rev. Dr Cyril Fayose, the council described the clashes between students of Obrachire Senior High Technical School and Swedru School of Business as deeply disturbing and contrary to the values educational and sporting events are meant to promote.

According to reports, the confrontation resulted in serious injuries to at least one student, who sustained a broken tooth and facial wounds that required hospitalisation. Videos of the incident, which circulated widely on social media, have sparked widespread public concern about discipline and safety during inter-school events.

The Council noted that such acts of violence undermine the peaceful spirit of sportsmanship and threaten the moral development of young people.

The CCG, however, commended the swift intervention by the Ghana Police Service, particularly the Criminal Investigations Department, under the leadership of Director-General COP Lydia Yarkor Donkor.

According to the Council, the CID’s immediate response—including the Director-General’s visit to the affected school, the commencement of investigations, the arrest of three suspects, and a directive to the headmaster of Swedru School of Business to produce the implicated students within 24 hours—demonstrates a strong commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of lives.

“These prompt measures send a clear signal that acts of indiscipline and lawlessness will not be tolerated,” the statement said.

The Council also praised the decision by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to indefinitely suspend all zonal inter-school sporting activities in the Central Region.

According to the Council, the suspension is a necessary step to ensure student safety, provide space for a comprehensive review of recent developments, and prevent further escalation amid rising concerns about indiscipline during inter-school competitions.

The CCG warned that the incident highlights broader moral challenges confronting young people and urged stakeholders to take collective action to address the situation.

“As a nation, we must not allow moral decadence and violent conduct to take root in our schools,” the Council stated, adding that preserving Ghana’s tradition of peaceful coexistence requires urgent attention from educators, parents, religious leaders, and authorities.

The Council reaffirmed its readiness to support initiatives that promote discipline, reconciliation, and the moral formation of students.

It also offered prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured students and wisdom for the authorities handling the matter.
