Nine public officers have been arrested and granted police inquiry bail following the interception of a container loaded with a massive quantity of undeclared Tramadol at the Tema Port.
The arrests follow a major operation by the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), which uncovered 299 cartons of tramadol hydrochloride tablets concealed inside a shipment falsely declared as household goods.

Those arrested include:
- Five Customs officers
- One officer from the Narcotics Control Commission
- One port security officer
- One officer from the Energy Commission of Ghana
- One officer from the Ghana Standards Authority
All nine individuals have been granted police-enquiry bail as investigations continue.
The seized consignment contained 146,932,000 tablets of tramadol hydrochloride in 250 mg and 225 mg strengths, with an estimated total weight of 34,847.2 kilograms.
According to officials, the drugs were not declared in the import documentation.
The container, numbered TGHU6228715 and cleared under Bill of Entry 40226151187, was detained on February 26, 2026, after intelligence gathered by the preventive wing of Customs raised suspicion. It was subsequently moved to a customs-controlled area in Tema for detailed examination.
The shipment originated from the United Arab Emirates and had been declared to contain assorted household items, including water kettles, kitchen blenders, pressing irons, energy-saving bulbs and polypropylene materials.
However, a joint re-examination conducted on March 1, 2026, by customs officers and the Central Revenue Monitoring Team uncovered concealed quantities of Tramadol hidden among the declared goods.
The importer and declarant have been handed over to the police to assist with investigations, while the seized drugs remain under customs control.
The Ghana Revenue Authority reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding national security, protecting public health and maintaining the integrity of Ghana’s revenue and border management systems.
Authorities say further updates will be provided as investigations progress into what is shaping up to be one of the largest pharmaceutical seizures at Tema Port in recent times.
