Tyrone Iras Marhguy, a former Achimota School alumnus and current student at the University of Pennsylvania, has achieved a remarkable technological feat by building a computer “brain” from scratch in his dormitory, designing a fully functional 8-bit Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) composed of 3,488 transistors.
The achievement, which took over 250 hours of intensive design and verification work, involved constructing the ALU one transistor at a time, using MOSFETs to create a system capable of performing 19 distinct operations. The design was rigorously tested using more than 1.2 million test vectors, confirming its accuracy and reliability.
What makes the feat even more striking is that Marhguy had no prior experience in chip design before embarking on the project. Determined to understand computing at its most fundamental level, he immersed himself deeply in the physics and logic behind digital systems, studying every gate, signal path and electron flow that powers what many see as the “black box” of a CPU.

According to him, the project was driven by a desire to move beyond abstraction and truly grasp how computers work at the hardware level, from first principles.
Phase One Completed
With the core ALU design now complete, Marhguy says the project is entering its next phase, which will focus on optimisation, printed circuit board (PCB) assembly, soldering, and extensive debugging. These steps are expected to further refine the system and bring it closer to a fully integrated computing unit.
Tyrone Marhguy is already a familiar name in Ghana and beyond. He gained national and international attention after winning a landmark court case against the Government of Ghana in 2023, a case widely seen as a significant stand for religious freedom in education. The legal victory cemented his reputation not only as a brilliant student but also as a principled advocate for fundamental rights.
As a Ghanaian student and young academic achiever, Marhguy continues to distinguish himself through both intellectual rigour and personal conviction, combining excellence in science and technology with a strong sense of purpose.
His latest achievement underscores a growing narrative: that Ghanaian talent, when given the space to thrive, can compete and innovate at the highest global levels.
