More than 22,000 delegates are expected to cast their ballots in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries in the Eastern Region on Saturday, January 31, 2026, as the party moves closer to selecting its flagbearer ahead of the next general elections.
The Eastern Regional Secretary of the NPP, Mr Osei Adjei, disclosed that 22,264 accredited delegates will participate in the exercise across 36 designated voting centres in the region. He stressed that proxy voting will not be permitted under any circumstances, in line with party regulations.
Speaking to Metro TV’s Eastern Regional Correspondent, Samuel Kwesi Appah Peniel, Mr Adjei explained that some voting centres, including New Juaben South, Nkawkaw, and Nsawam, have been split into multiple centres after delegate numbers exceeded 1,000 to ensure a smooth and orderly process.

He added that delegates whose photographs do not appear in the official voters’ album will still be allowed to vote, provided they present valid voter identification cards. Constituency officers stationed at the centres will verify such delegates before they are cleared to vote.
To guarantee a peaceful and incident-free election, Mr Adjei announced that 2,520 security personnel will be deployed across the region before, during, and after the primaries.
According to him, each voting centre will be manned by about 70 police officers, tasked with maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of delegates, party officials, journalists, and election officers.
The Eastern Region is expected to be a major political battleground, with intense lobbying and alignment of delegates behind various presidential aspirants.
While some party members are rallying support for Dr Bryan Acheampong, citing his Eastern Region roots, others argue that the party should avoid fielding another candidate from the region, noting that former President Nana Akufo-Addo also hails from the Eastern Region.
Mr Adjei assured that the party has formally engaged the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct the primaries at all voting centres, adding that regional party executives will not be involved in the conduct of the polls.
“The entire process will be managed by EC officials to ensure fairness and credibility,” he said.
The Regional Secretary also assured journalists of their safety and urged them to perform their duties without fear. However, he issued a strong warning to anyone attempting to disrupt the process.
“The party will not shield any individual who engages in acts that threaten the peace of the elections,” Mr Adjei cautioned.
He reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to a transparent, credible, and peaceful primary that truly reflects the will of delegates in the Eastern Region.
