Kasoa Residents Fear Disease Outbreak Over Poor Waste Disposal at Polyclinic

Residents of Walantu, a community in the Central Business Area of Kasoa, have raised alarm over a potential outbreak of infectious diseases, blaming poor waste management practices at the Kasoa Polyclinic.

According to the residents, liquid waste from the health facility has flowed through the community for years without proper channelling or treatment. Despite repeated complaints, they say management of the Polyclinic has failed to take concrete steps to resolve the situation.

The facility has been accused of discharging waste, including excrement, into open areas, a practice residents say has previously triggered confrontations between community members and hospital staff.

Speaking to Citi News, a local opinion leader, Francis Gasu, described the situation as a serious public health threat.

“It’s a big problem. It’s a big threat to all of us. This isn’t new; we’ve been dealing with this terrible situation for over 10 years. Often, the hospital staff pump out their waste, especially when it looks like it’s about to rain, whether day or night.

The whole area is engulfed in a terrible stench. We’ve complained to hospital administrators many times, but nothing changes because they are not the ones affected. Every day, we live with the risk of a major outbreak of communicable diseases,” he said.

Mr Gasu has therefore appealed to the Environmental Department of the Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly to intervene and compel the Polyclinic’s management to urgently address the health hazards confronting the community.
