Bryan Acheampong Campaign Unfazed by Bawumia Endorsement by 118 Former NPP Candidates

The campaign team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful Bryan Acheampong says it remains resolute and unfazed by the endorsement of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia by 118 former NPP parliamentary candidates.

Speaking in an interview with Citi News, Davies Opoku Ansah, Member of Parliament for Mpraeso and a member of Bryan Acheampong’s campaign team, dismissed the endorsement as inconsequential to their campaign momentum ahead of the party’s January 31 presidential primary.

According to him, the Acheampong campaign is firmly focused on grassroots mobilisation and engagement with delegates across the country and remains confident of emerging victorious.

“If they were to go back to their constituencies and do a little research, they would know that the endorsement they did yesterday was absolutely unnecessary,” Opoku Ansah said.

He argued that many of those who endorsed Dr Bawumia were already closely aligned with his campaign.

“Most of them are campaign managers and team members for Dr Bawumia. If you go to the constituencies and engage properly, this last-minute attempt to sway minds will not be necessary,” he added.

Opoku Ansah said Bryan Acheampong’s campaign has prioritised extensive nationwide engagement, noting that the candidate has been touring constituencies relentlessly.

“We are on the grounds, and we are working. Hopefully by Saturday, Dr Bryan Acheampong will have visited all 276 constituencies, and then we will begin our mop-up. We are sure of victory,” he stated.

The comments follow a press conference held on Thursday, January 8, where 118 former NPP parliamentary candidates from the 2024 general elections publicly declared their support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential primaries.

The group described Dr Bawumia as the most prepared and winnable candidate, citing his experience, competence, vision, and leadership qualities. They argued that none of the other aspirants contesting the flagbearership matched his credentials.

Addressing the media, the leader of the group and former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, said the endorsement followed a careful assessment of all the aspirants.

He stressed that their collective decision was informed by what they believe is best for the future of the NPP and its chances in the 2028 general elections.

Despite the endorsement, the Bryan Acheampong campaign insists it remains confident, maintaining that strong grassroots engagement, not high-profile declarations, will determine the outcome of the party’s internal contest.
