Yagbonwura Appeals for Airport in Savannah Region

The Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-kunu Jewu Soale I, has appealed to the government to consider the construction of an airport in the Savannah Region to enhance connectivity and accelerate socio-economic development.

The appeal was made during a working visit by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to the Jakpa Palace in Damongo. The visit formed part of activities marking the commissioning of the Savannah Regional Passport Application Centre.

The Yagbonwura assured the government that adequate and suitable land is readily available within the Gonja Kingdom for the proposed airport project, emphasising the kingdom’s readiness to support the initiative whenever the government is prepared to commence construction.

He also expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the establishment of the Passport Application Centre in the region, describing it as a timely intervention that would significantly improve access to essential public services for residents.

In his remarks, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa thanked the Overlord for the warm reception and explained that the Ministry is decentralising passport services to seven regional capitals, including Damongo, to bring services closer to the people.

He commended President Mahama for his vision of improving public service delivery and assured the Yagbonwura that his request for an airport in the Savannah Region would be formally conveyed to the President.

Savannah Regional Minister Salisu Bi-Awuribe also welcomed the commissioning of the Passport Application Centre, noting that it would reduce travel time and costs for residents who previously had to journey long distances to access passport services.
