According to the Embassy of Ghana in Washington, DC, Ambassador Smith was the first envoy to be received by President Trump on the day—an occurrence the mission described as symbolic of Ghana’s strong diplomatic presence and longstanding relations with the United States.

The meeting unfolded in a warm and cordial atmosphere. President Trump reportedly reacted with visible enthusiasm upon seeing the Ghanaian envoy, remarking, “Look at this good-looking guy,” a comment that drew laughter in the Oval Office and helped set a friendly tone for the engagement.

During the interaction, Ambassador Smith expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to serve and formally conveyed warm greetings from President John Dramani Mahama to the American leader. He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with the United States, underscoring the importance Accra places on bilateral cooperation.

The Ambassador highlighted Ghana’s political stability, democratic credentials, and economic potential, positioning the country as a reliable partner and strategic gateway to Africa. He noted that Ghana offers access to a sub-regional market of over 400 million people and a continental market exceeding 1.4 billion people, making it an attractive destination for U.S. businesses seeking expansion opportunities.

Ambassador Smith further drew attention to Ghana’s role as host of the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), describing it as a key pillar of Ghana’s ambition to become a hub for trade, investment, and industrial growth across the continent.

He emphasised Ghana’s readiness to deepen collaboration with American companies in critical sectors, including manufacturing, agribusiness, energy, technology, insurance, and services, stressing that economic diplomacy would remain a central focus of his mission.

In a forward-looking gesture, the Ambassador also extended an invitation to President Trump to visit Ghana, noting that such a visit would further cement diplomatic ties and open new avenues for cooperation between the two countries.

The presentation of credentials signals renewed momentum in Ghana–U.S. relations, as both nations look to build on decades of partnership anchored in shared democratic values, economic cooperation, and mutual strategic interests.
