Airtel Africa has announced a partnership with SpaceX to introduce Starlink’s direct-to-cell satellite technology across all its 14 African markets, a move aimed at expanding network connectivity in areas lacking terrestrial coverage.
The service, slated to roll out in 2026, will initially provide data for select applications and text messaging. Airtel Africa said customers with compatible smartphones in regions without traditional network infrastructure will be able to connect directly through Starlink satellites.
“This partnership will support Starlink’s first broadband Direct-to-Cell system, using next-generation satellites capable of delivering high-speed connectivity to smartphones with 20 times improved data speeds,” the company said in a statement.

The initiative follows a similar rollout by Kyivstar, Ukraine’s largest mobile operator, which last month became the first in Europe to deploy Starlink’s direct-to-cell technology. Kyivstar’s move was aimed at keeping millions connected amid wartime blackouts and damaged infrastructure.
For Africa, the collaboration with SpaceX represents a significant step toward bridging the digital divide, offering reliable mobile connectivity to remote and underserved regions. By leveraging satellite technology, Airtel Africa hopes to enhance digital inclusion, support economic activity, and improve communication access across the continent.
Experts note that while satellite-to-cell technology cannot yet match the speed and capacity of terrestrial networks, it is particularly transformative for rural areas, islands, and regions prone to natural disasters or infrastructure gaps.
The partnership signals a growing trend of telecom operators globally exploring satellite integration to extend coverage, ensuring connectivity reaches even the most challenging environments.
Airtel Africa did not specify pricing or detailed rollout timelines for individual countries but confirmed that the programme will begin in 2026.
